Fall in Calgary is short but spectacular — the kind of season that makes you want to grab your jacket, step outside, and soak it all in before winter arrives. The leaves transform into shades of gold, orange and red, while the air carries that perfect mix of warmth and chill. Every park, pathway and neighbourhood feels like a new backdrop for adventure.

The best part? You don’t need to spend a dime to enjoy it. From larch spotting to stargazing, Calgary is packed with free ways to celebrate autumn. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful solo walk, a cozy outing with friends, or a chance to explore a new corner of the city, this list has something for you.

Here are 17 free outdoor activities to help you make the most of fall in Calgary before the snow ultimately chases it all away.

1. Catch Reflections At Confederation Park

As the leaves change, the pond at Confederation Park acts like a mirror. And if you visit at golden hour, you’ll experience double the colour. Our interactive map, the Adventure Atlas, highlights even more unique features of this park, including a playground, walking paths, sport courts, and more.

2. Play A Round Of Disc Golf

Cooler weather = perfect disc golf weather without the crowds. Stanley Park, Baker Park, and John Laurie Park all make for fun fall rounds. Grab our Free Outdoor Fall Activities Guide to find some of our favourite spots to throw some disc around.

3. Get In One Last Paddle At Bowness Park

Before the season ends, get out on the water amongst the changing leaves as you float the lagoon and channel. Don’t have your own boat? Rent pedal boats and canoes from the on-site Boathouse, run by the University of Calgary Outdoor Centre.

Note: Before you go, check The Boathouse’s website to make sure it’s still open before it closes for the season!

4. Sip A Seasonal Beverage On A Park Bench

Grab your favourite fall drink (pumpkin spice, chai, hot apple cider, you name it!) and enjoy it outside. Sure, it sounds simple, but it’s the turning leaves and fresh crisp air that make the outdoors special this time of year. You can even search for nearby benches in our Adventure Atlas under the “Park Features” filter.

5. Bird Watch Along The Bow

From migrating geese to elusive owls, fall is peak bird-watching season. Grab your binoculars and stroll through Carburn Park, Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, or even your local wetlands. But before you go, read more about Ethical Birdwatching Tips and 12 Birds You Can See While Birdwatching in Calgary Parks.

6. Visit A Community Market

Some Calgary neighbourhoods — including Marda Loop, Shawnessy and downtown’s Stephen Avenue — host free fall markets and pumpkin fests. Even if you’re just browsing, it’s a great way to get outside and soak in the season while it lasts.

7. Walk The Boardwalk In Bowmont Park

The Silver Springs Boardwalk found in Bowmont Park is a hidden fall gem — follow it to the river and you’ll be enveloped by nature and silence. We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: strolling through this unique spot feels like you’ve escaped the city into your own natural haven. Find this boardwalk (and more right here in the city) on our interactive map by using the map’s searchbar.

8. Go Larch Hunting

No Alberta fall is complete without a larch hike. Head west and catch the golden glow on classic trails like Larch Valley and Healy Pass. Find our favourite 10 Photo-Worthy Larch Hikes in the Alberta Rocky Mountains here.

Don’t have time for a mountain drive? You can still find larches in Calgary’s parks and neighbourhoods! Grab a coffee and wander around Confederation Park, Edworthy Park, or near SAIT for innercity larch viewing. We’ve mapped out some of the known locations for you to explore on the Adventure Atlas — use the “Parks Features” filter or type “larch” into the map’s search bar.

9. Hike The Douglas Fir Trail

Tucked along the escarpment near Edworthy Park, this trail is one of Calgary’s most stunning fall walks and always one of our favourite outdoor activities in the colourful season. The trail itself is 2.5 kms long and features several lookout points. Just remember: walking only, no bikes!

Note: Part of this trail is currently closed for reconstruction due to pathway erosion. You’ll see the signs when and where to turn around.

10. Take A Stroll Through Nose Hill Park

Nose Hill is one of THE best places in the city to take in panoramic fall colours amongst the golden grass. Put on your comfiest pair of shoes and explore the trails while the leaves throughout Calgary’s northwest are still glowing.

11. Invite Friends To An Outdoor Fire

Fall is one of the coziest times for an evening spent outdoors! So, gather your friends, bundle up, and grab everything you need to make s’mores. Don’t have a backyard firepit? Head over to the Adventure Atlas to peruse public and bookable Calgary firepits.

12. Explore City Staircases With A View

McHugh Bluff, Crescent Heights, and other city staircases are perfect for a mini workout paired with some of the city’s best fall views. While you’re there, snap some photos of Calgary’s skyline at golden hour (and tag us @parksofcalgary)! Not only do sunsets come earlier in the fall, making it easier to catch them, but the views are simply unbeatable.

13. Wander Votier Flats In Fish Creek Park

This south-end corner of Fish Creek Park truly comes alive in fall. The cottonwoods and winding pathways make it a peaceful (and very photogenic) spot. Haven’t visited this large park before? Find some of our favourite spots in Fish Creek Provincial Park, a blog highlighting top outdoor activities, attractions, and more.

14. Bike The Bow River Pathway

From Edworthy Park to Pearce Estate, there are endless sections to explore. Aim to hit a different stretch each week — the colours change quickly, and no two rides feel the same. But don’t forget, this pathway is often shared with pedestrians and pets alike, so brush up on your pathway etiquette before you go

15. Picnic In Prince’s Island Park

Swap summer picnics for cozy fall gatherings: think thermoses of soup, blankets, and hot chocolate under the changing trees. Looking for new places to go? Use our Ultimate Guide For Outdoor Picnics & Barbeques In Calgary Parks before you go to find the perfect spot.

16. Watch For Wildlife In Carburn Park

Deer, beavers, birds — Carburn is full of fall wildlife activity. A slow walk here feels like stepping into another world. And if you’re lucky, you may even Meet Your Wild Neighbours: Wildlife Commonly Spotted In Calgary Parks.

17. Go For A Walk Under The Stars

Clear, crisp skies make for perfect stargazing beneath the changing trees. Bundle up and wander your neighbourhood after dark — no equipment needed.

Fall doesn’t last long in Calgary, which is why these little moments feel extra special. Pick a few ideas from this list, grab a friend (or go solo), and soak in the season while it’s here.
