Top 5 Must-Visit Island Parks In Calgary, Alberta

While Calgary is typically known for its extensive pathways, ample greenspaces and occasional views of the Rocky Mountains, it’s also centred around two major rivers. Despite being a land-locked province, the Bow River and Elbow River attract people year-round, with unique wildlife, rocky beaches, water activities, and, believe it or not, islands.

If you’ve spent much time along the Bow River, you’ve probably noticed the occasional rugged island as you walk the pathways or float down the water. While many of these islands are small, untouched and unreachable, there are five official islands in the city.

Below we’ll share a bit about each park, so you can explore a Calgary island next time you’re out and about.

Prince’s Island Park

Found in the heart of downtown Calgary along the Bow River, Prince’s Island Park may be the city’s most iconic and beloved riverfront park. Best known for its walking paths, towering trees and countless summer events, you’ll also find Mirror Pond and the Peace Bridge nearby. Since there is no on-site parking lot, you’ll need to walk, bike, scooter, or find nearby parking. Here’s what you can expect the next time you’re out for a stroll along the river near Calgary’s downtown.

Park Features

  • Attend Popular Events Like: Calgary Folk Music Festival, Expo Latino, Great Outdoor Comedy Festival, Shakespeare In The Park, and more.
  • Walk The Pathways: Winding paved and dirt trails go around and through this island park, including the Chevron Learning Pathway.
  • Enjoy The Lagoon: You’ll often find people lounging by the water, watching birds or skating in winter when it’s cold enough.
  • Plan A Picnic: There are countless areas perfect for you to set up a picnic, equipped with picnic tables, barbeques and open greenspace, and enjoy an afternoon or evening outdoors. Want more picnic ideas? Check out our Ultimate Guide For Outdoor Picnics & Barbeques In Calgary Parks.
  • Dine At A Restaurant: Don’t want to plan or pack a picnic? Make a reservation at the River Cafe, a fine dining experience (or order one of their picnics to go!).

Fun Fact: Prince’s Island Park is a man-made island, created when a channel was dug in the 1900s to get logs from Kananaskis.

You’ll find several walking and biking trails leading into the park, as well as the main road that leads to a large, free parking lot.

Located on the Elbow River, this island park is a small, lesser-known gem in Calgary’s park system. You’ll find it tucked along the 4th Street bridge near Mission. Park on nearby residential streets and walk down a set of stairs to discover the natural island. It’s the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city living.

  • Wander Unmaintained Trails: Find serene, short pathways that offer an ‘escape from the city’ without ever leaving it.
  • Find Secluded Spots: With plenty of quiet areas along the shore, it’s ideal for hangouts or picnics. There are even 2 chairs at the tip of the island!
  • Bring Your Rod: The Elbow River is a popular spot for fly fishing, offering a beautiful setting for anglers. Occasionally, you can even see the fish! We saw a massive trout while walking over the 4th Street bridge!

St. Patrick’s Island is a large 31-acre urban park along the Bow River, just east of Calgary’s downtown. This island has undergone a remarkable transformation, becoming a popular recreational space for residents and visitors alike. Its strategic location along the Bow River Pathway and across from East Village makes it easily accessible and a popular destination for urban explorers.

Park Features

  • Walk Up The Rise: This is a prominent 9-metre hill often used for tobogganing in the winter. And in the summer, you can attend performances and movies in the park.
