Trails, Parks & Adventures Around The Glenmore Reservoir

Calgary’s Glenmore Reservoir isn’t just a part of the city’s water system — it’s our secret playground for long walks, epic views, and weekend adventures. Whether you’re chasing a personal best on your run, letting the kids burn off energy, or just craving a peaceful solo escape, the reservoir area has something for everyone.

Here are 5 adventures you can set out on to make the most of this beautiful urban oasis.

Take a Stroll (Or Run!) Around The Reservoir

The well-maintained, paved trail around the reservoir measures roughly 15 km, making it perfect for walkers, runners, parents with strollers and cyclists alike. The trail will take you through a variety of landscapes — like grassy fields, tall forests, over bridges, and beside meadows — and features plenty of lookout points over the water. Not to mention, you can catch views of rivers and nearby Heritage Park.

Whether you’re planning to stay for an hour or several, there are plenty of benches for you to take a breather, as well as permanent bathrooms conveniently located at both ends of the reservoir, so you don’t have to plan your route around rest stops.

Adventure Through North Glenmore Park

If you’re looking for a spot that truly has it all, North Glenmore Park is one of our go-tos. This 84-hectare green space sits on the north side of the reservoir, giving you sweeping views of the water, nearby Weaselhead Flats, and even the mountains in the distance — perfect for soaking it all in while you wander or relax.

Whether it’s summer or winter, there’s always something happening here. In the warmer months, you’ll find people walking, running, lounging on the grass, paddling along the water, or enjoying a game of tennis. During winter? The park transforms into a snowy playground with cross-country skiing trails, skating, snowshoeing, crockicurl and even an ice trail that’s as fun to explore as it is photogenic.

For a little extra fun, check out the unique games and activities around the park. You’ll find foosball, ping pong, cornhole, and even a chess table (just bring your own chess or backgammon pieces if you want to play). Larches dot the park too, especially between parking lots D & E, so it’s a great spot for a burst of golden colour in the fall.

Other perks include fitness equipment near the North Glenmore Park Community Association, plenty of picnic areas and benches, firepits, inclusive playgrounds, and dog-friendly spaces (on-leash, of course!).

Experience Weaselhead Flats

If you head southwest from North Glenmore, you’ll spot wooded trails across a long, teal pedestrian bridge going over the water. That’s Weaselhead Flats — one of Calgary’s hidden gems. This 237-hectare park in southwest Calgary is one of the few spots in the city where nature truly takes center stage (no dogs, no bikes, just pure, peaceful wilderness.)

Weaselhead is perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle without leaving the city. Wander the trails at your own pace and soak in the sights and sounds of nature: tall grasses swaying in the breeze, birds flitting between trees, and maybe even a deer quietly observing from a distance.

But access here is a bit different! It’s not immediately reachable by car, so be prepared to stroll in from the nearby Glenmore loop. Once you’re there, the sparse benches and river access offer just enough comfort to pause and enjoy the serenity, while the occasional wooden bridge provides a scenic spot to take it all in.

Take The Jack Rabbit Trail

For a slightly more adventurous twist on the Glenmore Reservoir loop, check out the Jack Rabbit Trail. This tucked-away path winds along the southwest side of the reservoir through a hidden wooded area with gentle rolling hills, giving you a sense of being deep in the forest while still staying close to the city. You’ll be surrounded by trees, the sounds of lapping water, and the occasional glimpse of wildlife — all while getting a solid dose of fresh air and movement.

It’s perfect for a run, a brisk walk, or even a reflective solo stroll. Bring your camera or phone too; there are plenty of spots that make for stunning photos of both the reservoir and the forested hillsides. And don’t worry about missing the main reservoir loop! This trail connects you seamlessly back to the 15 km paved path, so you can mix and match depending on your mood and energy.

Discover South Glenmore Park

Sprawling across 347 hectares on the south side of the reservoir, South Glenmore Park is a true gem for anyone looking to spend a day outside in Calgary. Nestled next to the Oakridge community, Weaselhead Flats, and the reservoir itself, this park draws Calgarians from all over the city! And it’s easy to see why.

There’s so much to do here, it’s hard to know where to start. Tennis courts, a bike pump track, a polo field, and the Glenmore Sailing School keep activity levels high, while families will love the playground and accessible spray park to cool off on a hot day. In fact, this park is home to Variety Children’s Park, one of Calgary’s standout inclusive play spaces designed for children of all abilities. Not only is it fully fenced and wheelchair accessible with rubber surfacing, but it’s surrounded by musical instruments, ensuring that every child can join in on the fun.

South Glenmore Park is also home to the Quinterra Legacy Garden Project and plenty of larches, making it ideal for a peaceful wander or a photo op. Picnic tables, benches, and river access make it easy to set up for a relaxing afternoon, and pups are welcome to join the adventure on-leash.

It doesn’t matter if you’re seeking active fun, family time, or just a spot to unwind and enjoy the water views, South Glenmore Park delivers. It’s big, it’s beautiful, and there’s always a new corner to explore.
