The holidays don’t have to be busy, expensive, or even spent indoors. In fact, some of our favourite Christmas-themed activities are the simple ones — like wandering through twinkling trees, sipping something warm outside, or discovering pockets of festive magic across the city.
Whether you’re chasing Christmas lights, looking for a budget-friendly family outing, or searching for a cozy evening walk, here are our top free or low-cost outdoor spots to explore this season.
Stroll Along Stephen Avenue
As you can see above, Stephen Ave might be one of the most festive streets in Calgary. With lights strung up overhead, busy storefronts, street performers, and that buzzing downtown holiday energy, it’s the perfect spot for an evening wander.
If you’re heading to a restaurant or holiday event downtown this season, tack on this walking-only street for a free dose of Christmas spirit and some extra steps.
Wander & Cross-Country Ski In Confederation Park

Celebrating its 39th year (and possibly the last one ever), the Lion’s Festival of Lights is one of Calgary’s longest-running holiday traditions. Entirely volunteer-powered, this walkthrough display transforms Confederation Park Golf Course into a glowing winter wonderland. It’s nostalgic, community-driven, and perfect for an easy, feel-good evening out.
Want to get the blood pumping? Bring your cross-country skis to glide through the rest of this golf course. The Foothills Nordic Ski Club operates and maintains groomed trails here, and they’re fantastic! Find conditions, trails and pricing here.
Hygge Hut & East Village

East Village always goes all-in for the holidays. Here’s what you’ll find this year:
- Giant decorative presents near the roundabout
- The Hygge Hut (check their posted hours), a warm, fire-lit gathering space
- Festive displays that change each season
- Occasional weekend events and pop-ups
- Cross-country skiing loop
It’s walkable, bright, and full of unexpected holiday touches. Check their website for up-to-date activities.
Admire & Skate At Bowness Park

Bowness Park might just be the most magical place in Calgary during the holidays. Towering poplars wrapped in lights line the park, creating a stunning glow as you wander along the lagoon and riverbank.
Here’s why it’s a must-visit every winter:
- You can skate (or rent an ice bike!)
- Fires are lit all winter with plenty of seating
- Heated public washrooms
- Cozy cafe for grab-and-go hot drinks
- Full-service restaurant if you want to extend your evening
- Quiet, festive, and endlessly photogenic

Brave The Crowds To See The CP Holiday Train
A once-a-year experience! The Holiday Train rolls into Calgary with live music, thousands of lights, and a huge crowd. After going last year, we’ll be honest: it gets packed.
But since it’s a classic “do it once” holiday moment, it might still be worth braving the crowds. Check out this year’s stop, date, and time on the CP website.
Shop & Skate At University District

Located in Calgary’s northwest, Central Commons Park shines this time of year. You’ll find a towering Christmas tree, a glowing moose, and a public skating rink surrounded by lights. It’s the perfect spot for a casual evening stroll, especially when they’re hosting night markets.
And if you explore the neighbourhood, you’ll often find extra surprises. Last year, a cluster of snowmen popped up near the Discovery Centre. Great vibes, great lights, and great for families.
Bring Your Dog To Silver Springs Botanical Gardens

So this one isn’t a light display, but it’s absolutely worth the visit. Every winter, part of the Silver Springs Botanical Gardens transforms into Reindeer Lane, a charming DIY holiday installation created by community volunteers.
Wander through this short section of the park, and you’ll spot Christmas decorations, wooden creations, and holiday magic sprinkled throughout the trees. It’s also an off-leash park, so feel free to bring your pup!
Want To Adventure Outside Of Calgary?
Drive Through Spruce Meadows
If you’re looking for a low-cost evening you can enjoy from the warmth of your car, the Spruce Meadows drive-through light display is a great option (and typically free). We haven’t made it out yet, but it’s long been a local favourite. Check out this cool overhead fly-by from last year!
Airdrie & Okotoks
If you feel like venturing further, you’ll find outdoor magic both north and south of the city. Airdrie Festival of Lights offers walk-through displays, skating, fire pits, and weekend entertainment, while Okotoks has its own festive light installations throughout the downtown area. Both are family-friendly and worth the short drive.
