Why We Keep Coming Back To This Northwest Neighbourhood

It’s no secret that Calgary has been guilty of urban sprawl, but there’s a particular neighbourhood designed with people (not just cars) in mind.

With a mix of nature, patios and people, there’s always something going on in University District — without the chaos of venturing downtown. We’ve personally watched this area transform into 200 acres of amenities, services, and experiences for urban living.

Whether it’s a weekend stroll, a spontaneous lunch, or an afternoon at the park, this northwest community always makes us want to stay a little longer. Maybe it’s the blend of city energy and quiet corners, or the fact that we discover something new on every excursion.

The entire area is designed to help people spend time together, with inclusive play areas, pet-friendly spaces, street-level retail and public gathering zones. It’s walkable, accessible and truly inviting.

Here’s why this growing neighbourhood keeps us coming back again and again for more adventures.

Parks & Greenspaces For Every Mood

What first attracted us to this area was, no surprise, the number of parks. Whether you want peace and quiet or a bustling plaza near restaurants and shops, there’s a spot here for everyone.

If you’re seeking calm, South Pond is our favourite. Here, you’ll find a few benches along the mix of paved and dirt paths running through the greenspace and around the natural wetland. We’ve had ducks swim and waddle right up to us, as it’s common to see a variety of feathered friends here, like red-winged blackbirds, chickadees, sparrows and geese. It’s the perfect spot to go for a walk, read a book, encounter some wildlife or simply enjoy the sunshine.

If you’re looking for a more interactive experience, check out Central Commons Park. This open plaza is perfect for a picnic or letting the kids run wild in the splash pad — we’ve seen birthday parties, barbecues, night markets, performances and more. We’ve even enjoyed healthy take-out bowls from Seed & Salt and new Village Ice Cream flavours more times than we can count under the shade. During the winter, this space becomes a skating rink with cozy fire pits and outdoor markets.

Want to explore more parks near this bustling neighbourhood? Shouldice Park, Dale Hodges, Bowmont Park and an outdoor fitness circuit are all within walking distance.

Over 12 Kilometers Of Pathways, Trails & Sidewalks

University District didn’t just tack on sidewalks… They designed a comfortable, accessible neighbourhood that makes you want to explore the interconnected pathway system. Many of the sidewalks are extra-wide, so there’s plenty of room for strollers, wheelchairs, dogs on leash, and side-by-side conversations.

Routes here intentionally curve past community features like stormwater ponds or the fully-enclosed off-leash urban dog park at North Pond with separate spaces for small and large dogs. You can walk almost 2 kilometers — from North Pond to South Pond — on a paved, multi-use pathway. We walk or run here almost every week!

Even a quick trip to the grocery store might take you on a scenic detour to admire the lush landscaping or new additions to this growing community. And keep your eyes peeled: you might spot more dogs per capita than almost anywhere else in the city.

Thoughtfully Designed With Sustainability In Mind

This isn’t just another pretty neighbourhood we like to visit — it’s also a leader in sustainable design.

University District was the first community in Alberta to be certified LEED-ND Platinum, a designation that considers everything from walkability and transportation to water conservation and building standards.

The stormwater ponds you walk by? They’re not just designed for aesthetics, but for managing runoff in a way that supports the local ecosystem. Native plants and thoughtful landscaping reduce maintenance needs while boosting biodiversity in the area.

Discover Something New Every Time You Visit

Even if you’re a diehard inner-city dweller, University District is worth the trip. Because you don’t need to live here to enjoy the perks.

Whether it’s a bustling outdoor night market, live music on a patio or a seasonal menu at one of the countless restaurants, there’s always something exciting to check out. Even a weekday walk can turn into an impromptu hangout when you spot happy hour deals at Borough Bar & Grill or sunny patio tables at The Canadian Brewhouse overlooking Central Commons Park and street-level retail.

Every time we visit this neighbourhood, there’s a new restaurant, fitness studio or condo building underway. So whether you’re visiting for the first time or the tenth, University District offers something fresh, no matter the mood you’re in.

Built For Calm, Convenience & Connection

Every detail here seems to ask the same question: How can we make it easier for people to connect?

The Northwest Commons Park award-winning inclusive playground doesn’t just meet accessibility standards; it encourages play for everyone, side by side. The dog park isn’t just fenced; it has shady spots and benches so you can chat with others while your pups run around. And the pathways? They’re naturally social and wide nearly everywhere you go.

Plus, you’ll find public seating all over the place — in all four parks (with more to come), along the sidewalks, and at over a dozen bus stops if you decide to transit here. We’ve even run into Parks of Calgary community members at public events often held in Central Commons Park. The cozy fire pits make it easy to start a conversation and warm up on those chillier nights, so you won’t feel like a stranger for long.
