Your Guide To Exploring Bowness Park In The Winter

bowness park night holiday lights + skating

You might think visiting Calgary parks is mainly a summer activity, but Bowness Park in the winter is just as spectacular. Here you’ll find towering trees wrapped in lights, several skating surfaces and numerous maintained firepits to cozy up at, making it one of Calgary’s best outdoor winter destinations.

So hold on to your toque, as we walk you through experiencing Bowness Park in the winter.

5 Ways To Stay Active Outdoors At Bowness Park In The Winter

That’s right — take a break from your winter hibernation and take advantage of these five outdoor activities in Bowness.

Skate The Day (Or Night!) Away

The most popular winter activity in Bowness Park is definitely skating. The frozen lagoon, creek and ice trail along the river offer plenty of space for the people to skate all hours of the day — open from 5am to 11pm daily. Don’t forget to spot Bownessie. Plus, after dark, it’s a totally different experience. Admire the lights strung up on the trees and more lighting up the ice. Before you go, check to see if the lagoon is skating-ready.

You can also find skate sharpening, skate rentals and free helmets from the University of Calgary Outdoor Center here. Note that hockey sticks, nets and toboggans aren’t allowed on the ice.

Rent An Ice Bike On-site

Want to try something new this winter? Give riding an ice bike a go (and rent it on-site). How does this work? The front tire is removed and fitted with a skate, while the back tire has two blades and a wide base — no balancing on ice required! The bikes are available to rent on Saturdays and Sundays in half-hour increments on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Take A Winter Hike

You don’t have to wait for warmer weather to enjoy our inner-city nature. Try the 4.3 km Bowness Park Loop that takes you around the whole area. Start at the main parking lot, and follow the creek to enjoy riverside views, and follow the trail from there.

For a longer trek, the Bow River Pathway spans 48 kilometers, running all the way from Bearspaw Dam to Fish Creek Provincial Park. Connecting major parks and green spaces here in Calgary, it’s a year-round multi-use trail.

Play Crokicurl

Ever played disc-flicking crokinole on a wooden board? Well, this unique outdoor game combines this age-old household game with curling. It only requires curling stones, which are provided, and a fun attitude. The rink is free to use daily, so round up your pals and try it out.

Go Cross-Country Skiing Or Snowshoeing

If you’ve got that x-country itch, check out Bowness Park’s trails. The City of Calgary says they’re groomed, but it might be hit or miss! And if that’s not your thing, give snowshoeing a try and forage your own path — when there’s enough snow, of course!

Where You Can Warm Up At Bowness Park In The Winter

Bowness Park is an incredible summer destination, but it’s also fully set up for winter, with multiple places for you to relax in between activities without getting too cold.

Warm Up By The Roaring Fire Pits

You’ll find a few fire pits lining the lagoon and up on the wooden platform where you put your skates on. It’s a great spot to rest and meet new people, as well as warm up your fingers and toes. You can also book the picnic areas if you’re planning a group gathering.

Grab A Warm Beverage

The Lagoon Cafe and Cappuccino Bar is the perfect spot to grab a hot chocolate or coffee before going for a skate at Bowness Park. Located across the wooden platform, you can also snag some baked goods while you’re at it.

Eat A Meal At Seasons Of Bowness

Perched on the lagoon’s shore, this upscale but laidback restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. Whether you want a drink or a full 3-course meal, you can watch people skate by from the warmth of indoors.

Grab Takeout At Angel’s Drive-In

On your way in or out of Bowness Park, find the historic Angel’s Drive-In. Known for classic burgers, shakes and other fast food, it serves up eats in a playful 1950s style.

Other Things To Do At Bowness Park In The Winter

Bowness Park’s 74 acres of water, trees, play areas and paths mean you can always find something to do. Here are a few more winter ideas for you to explore:

  • Appreciate the towering trees glowing with lights. Visit the park around dusk, or after the sun has gone down, to wander amongst the poplars wrapped with strands and strands of Christmas lights.
  • Play at the large playground. As if this park wasn’t already a kids’ jungle gym, there is a large playground suitable for all ages and also includes accessibility features.
  • Take your dog for a walk. While there is no off-leash area in Bowness Park, this scenic oasis tends to be a hotspot for dogs of all sizes to enjoy with their owners.
